Maryland Courts
Understanding the Maryland Court System
In Maryland, a crime is characterized as either a misdemeanor or a felony. Misdemeanors are less serious offenses in the Maryland and federal law code and are generally punished by fines and/or no more than one year in prison. However, there are certain misdemeanors, such as Second Degree Assualt that can carry as much as 10 years in prison. Felonies carry higher fines and more severe penalties ranging from one year to life in prison, and even the death penalty.
Depending on whether you’re charged with a misdemeanor or felony, your case will be heard in either the District Court or Circuit Court. The District Court hears cases involving motor vehicle violations, misdemeanors, and certain felonies. Circuit Courts hear cases involving serious felony crimes and all jury trials.
